Hodgdon Pyrodex P Black Powder Substitute
Hodgdon’s Pyrodex was the first widely available substitute on the market. It is less sensitive to ignition than black powder, and uses the same shipping and storage guidelines as smokeless powder. It is more energetic per unit of mass than black powder, but it is less dense, and can be substituted at a 1:1 ratio by volume for black powder in many applications.
It is similar in composition to black powder, consisting primarily of charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate, but it also contains graphite and potassium perchlorate, plus additional ingredients protected by trade secret
When measured volumetrically with a black powder measure, Pyrodex P is intended to be a direct replacement for FFFg Black powder. P is primarily used in muzzleloading pistols, cap and ball revolvers, and small bore muzzleloading rifles. It burns cleaner and produces less fouling than blackpowder, as do all grades of Pyrodex.
It is primarily used in pistols and small bore rifles (45 caliber and below). P can also be used as a priming charge in guns with a twisted or fouled ignition channel or other ignition issues. On a particle size basis, P compares to 3F black powder.
Note:
- Do not exceed the loads displayed in the reloaders guide.
- Never mix any two powders regardless of type, brand, or source.
- Never substitute any smokeless powder for Black Powder or any Black Powder subs.
